BIKE Bellingham's Origin Story
Hi, I’m Sarah. I love exploring by bicycle. I love it so much that in 2012, I quit my job, downsized my belongings, sold my home, and spent the next 12 years living as a full-time nomad. In the summers, I explored my wanderlust on two wheels. In the winters, I chased eternal summer in the southern hemisphere. In the shoulder seasons, I housesat for kitties and planned my next adventures. During those peripatetic years, I pedaled thousands of miles. I also guided bike trips and designed week-long itineraries for tour companies. What I learned during my travels was this: It was never about the bike. It was always about the places I visited, the people I met, the experiences I had, and the memories I made. It was about feeling connected.
Twelve years is a long time to be without a home. In 2024, I decided to put down roots here in Bellingham. The transition to a more conventional lifestyle was, admittedly, rough. During my travels, I was driven by curiosity and a constant hunger to explore. I devoured everything — new places, new people, new experiences, new memories. When I settled in Bellingham, that hunger didn’t fade. I needed to find a way to keep a sense of discovery alive in a new world, one smaller than 30 square miles. One day the answer came to me: “I just need to keep doing what I’ve been doing all along.” The math is simple; if the size of the territory is decreased, then the breadth and depth of the curiosity must be increased.
And so it was that BIKE Bellingham was born. I funneled my passion for bicycle travel into sharing two-wheeled exploration with others. I started Curioocity LLC, a business that develops tours that foster discovery and connection to community. BIKE Bellingham, one of the programs I’ve developed through Curioocity, is my way of both giving back and paying forward to this community that means so much to me.
When I first conceived the idea of BIKE Bellingham, I quickly scribbled down a list of 20 themed ride guides that could connect cyclists with the community. That list quickly grew to 30, and I’m still thinking of new rides. My mind is full of ideas to inspire exploration by bicycle and connection to community. This includes new program features, creative collaborations, and local events. With the community’s support, I am bringing these ideas to fruition.
I hope BIKE Bellingham will inspire you to explore by bicycle and, in doing so, grow your connection to Bellingham. I’m certain that the more you feel connected, the more you’ll love this place where you live and recreate.
